Writing Seeds Workshops for 3rd grade and up

I share my journalistic tools and author process to inspire student writers to help grow their own creative “idea seeds” to approach all writing, fiction and non-fiction. This day can be scheduled to meet your school schedule, but an hour per session gives students plenty of time for numerous writing prompts. I can do this workshop with large groups, but it works best with 50 students or less for an intensive workshop experience.

Items required for my visits:

Powerpoint projector and screen (I bring my own laptop)

A small table

A microphone if this event is held in a large room

A glass or bottle of water

Additional notes about my presentations:

The basics: Three highly-interactive, core-curriculum relatable presentations featuring my author journey and writer research tools, with more in-depth tree, bee, sea, and rock facts for upper grade students.

Pre-planning info: Be creative! Schools often do nature writing or art projects from recyclable materials to determine who “wins” lunch with the author. I’ll meet with your “Green Team,” plant, garden, or environmental club if your school sponsors that type of group. Teachers have filled the school with student poetry, essays, and artwork based on my books, such as amazing “door contests” for every grade. Students have gathered cans and plastic bottles for recycling to see which class can collect the most prior to my visit. Students have initiated fundraising projects before my visit for local environmental and charitable projects, such as helping raise funds for the Hurricane Sandy Relief.

Lunch: I try to eat healthy, so a salad is lovely, but I always enjoy pizza lunches, too.

Books: You may contact a local independent bookseller to help with flyers and pre-orders for book sales (my preference to support local businesses) or pre-order my books directly from my publishers (Albert Whitman & Co. or Merit Press) for students who wish to own an autographed copy of one of my titles.
